Job Description
Employee Relations Manager
The Employee Relations Manager plays a key role in fostering a positive, fair, and compliant workplace environment. This position facilitates the resolution of employee and management concerns, provides confidential consultation, supports the University’s progressive discipline process, and minimizes organizational risk while promoting strong employee performance. The role also partners closely with various campus offices to address sensitive matters, ensure policy compliance, and provide leadership and employment-law training.
What you will be doing in this position:
Employee Relations & Conflict Resolution
Investigate formal and informal complaints; develop strategies to resolve grievances.
Provide a confidential, neutral forum for managers and employees to discuss concerns.
Deliver mediation, conflict resolution, career counseling, and role clarification.
Guide employees and managers through reframing conversations and constructive dialogue.
Ensure all issues are handled promptly, fairly, and equitably
Progressive Discipline & Management Consultation
Advise managers on disciplinary actions related to performance, behavior, and conduct.
Draft and review disciplinary letters, warnings, and separation documents.
Provide clear options and risk assessments during the discipline process.
Monitor and authorize involuntary terminations in consultation with appropriate leadership.
Conduct investigations and coordinate high-risk matters with General Counsel.
Maintain deep knowledge of employment law and University policies.
Special Assignments & Program Oversight ( as assigned by managing director )
Investigate equal opportunity complaints and prepare findings reports.
Collaborate with Leaves/Accommodations and Title IX offices on related cases.
Provide coaching for campus leaders on communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.
Supervise and coordinate:
Ecclesiastical Clearance Program
Background Check Program
Unemployment Compensation Program
Participate on the Ban Review Committee.
Review exit survey data, provide insights, and advise on policy improvements.
Training & Policy Education
Deliver training on employment law, employee relations best practices, FMLA, documentation, and other workplace compliance topics.
What qualifies you for this role:
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field and 10 years of employee relations and/or equal opportunity experience
OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred
Advanced degree in counseling or human resources.
Required Skills & Knowledge
Strong experience with employee discipline, termination processes, and employment law.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Extensive counseling, mediation, negotiation, and conflict-resolution abilities.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust quickly.
Thorough knowledge of personnel and labor laws, including unemployment, workers’ comp, and disability regulations.
Understanding of university structures, mission, and policies.

Typical Starting Pay: $92,000-$119,000
