Position Description: The HR Generalist is responsible for handling all of the day-to-day HR responsibilities for our small non-profit organization. This is a part-time, temporary, independent contractor position. The anticipated contract duration is 6 months, with the successful candidate working approximately 15 hours per week between April and September 2025. Preferred hours are 9am to 12pm, Monday to Friday. The position will be mostly remote, with 1 day per month in our midtown Manhattan office. 

Reporting to the President, the HR Generalist will ensure all day-to-day and cyclical HR processes are completed efficiently and effectively. This will include benefits administration, payroll, recruitment, policy administration, performance reviews, compensation, and employee relations.  


What you will do: 

  • Act as benefits administrator. Answer questions from employees, make updates to accounts. Research and renew benefits plans annually, in accordance with budget and staff needs. 

  • Manage payroll activity. This includes checking the bi-weekly payroll for accuracy and making any changes necessary to employee or employer additions and deductions. 

  • Answer queries on HR policies and work with President to interpret any ambiguity when necessary. Review and update policies as necessary. 

  • Lead annual HR processes, such as performance review process and staff satisfaction survey. 

  • Manage the recruitment process in partnership with hiring managers, the President and members. Provide guidance to President and Supervisors on compensation. 

  • Handle all onboarding and offboarding of employees. 

  • Provide coaching, counseling and guidance to leadership team and employees. 

  • Provide guidance to President and Supervisors on employee relations issues such as performance management cases or employee grievances and concerns. 

  • Administrator for time off request system – manage time off eligibility and requests, including flex time, remote working requests etc. 

  • Administrator for Microsoft 365 – user account creation and deletion; manage access and privileges to mailboxes; update distribution lists; troubleshoot IT issues etc. 

  • General HR administration such as employment verification requests and ad-hoc requests. 

  • Attend weekly staff meeting to keep employees informed of any relevant HR topics, and ensure that HR is updated on the organization’s projects, strategies and goals. 


Key Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or related experience 

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a generalist HR capacity 

  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws 

  • A passion for our mission and the AAPI community 

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills 

  • Strong skills cultivating and maintaining relationships across departments, with managers and senior leaders 

  • The ability to be self-motivated 

  • Excellent project management skills and attention to detail 

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, act with diplomacy and tact, as well as maintain confidentiality in all interactions 

  • Highly responsive and the ability to influence  

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, OneDrive, QuickBooks or other related payroll system 


Compensation & Benefits: 

Hourly Rate of $40 - $60 per hour, depending on experience. Approximately 15 hours per week. 

This is an independent contractor position and does not come with benefits.
