HR Specialist

Job Type: Full time – Salary

Job Location: Detroit, Michigan

Job Summary:

The Human Resources Specialist manages core HR functions and processes including recruiting, onboarding, benefits administration, worker's compensation and employee and labor relations while ensuring compliance with labor laws. As a key member of the plant management team, the incumbent collaborates with the Corporate HR team to ensure excellence in HR policies and processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Support employee relations issues ensuring compliance with employment laws.

Assist in dispute resolution and grievance procedures.

Provide guidance and coaching while maintaining impartiality and supporting a positive work culture. Escalate issues to Corporate HR when necessary.

Manage workers' compensation claims and return-to-work initiatives.

Coordinate recruiting activities such as posting jobs, reviewing applicants, scheduling interviews, arranging physicals and drug screenings, and conducting background checks.

Conduct onboarding activities including I-9 compliance and collecting appropriate documentation for employee files and payroll. Maintain employee records and files.

Process benefit enrollments and benefit changes. Answer employee questions about benefits and PTO.

Direct activities with staffing agencies as needed.

Administer and track compliance with FMLA and other leaves of absence.

May assist with unemployment claims, training records, and safety events.

Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

HR experience – 3 to 5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting, preferably in a union environment.

College degree preferred but not required. HR certification preferred but not required.

In depth knowledge of employment laws including FMLA and FLSA.

Experience with worker's claims and return-to-work initiatives.

Proficient with MS Office products, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Experience with time management software such as ADP.

Physical Demands:

The environment is an office located at a manufacturing plant. The company paints and coats metal parts. The office is exposed to some fumes and smells coming from the plant. In addition, noises from the plant are constant throughout the day. Tasks will require this position to regularly enter the plant. Furthermore, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
