Definition of Classification:

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for fostering a positive and productive work environment and will provide client-centered support for day-to-day Human Resources (HR) needs and acts as an initial HR contact, including but not limited to employee relations, retention, policy interpretation, and resource management.  The HR Generalist is an essential role within the HR and Employee Relations Team, ensuring compliance with university policies and all federal, state, and local employment laws.  The role serves as a resource for employees and people leaders. The HR Generalist requires strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills to address workplace concerns, facilitate conflict resolution, and promote a culture of inclusivity and fairness. This position involves time-sensitive work in accurately diagnosing organizational issues and implementing action plans.  The HR Generalist will partner with HR Leadership and support the performance management system process, which will include goal setting and annual evaluations. This key role will also support the professional development and program development for individual contributors and people leaders. Reporting to the Director of Employee Relations & Human Resources Business Partner, provides cross-functional support in a variety of activities to meet departmental goals and objectives. The role requires well-developed verbal and written skills to present and exchange information, which is technical, complex, and sensitive to all faculty, staff, and students on campus. This position plans and carries out work independently and with minimum supervision, is responsible for prioritizing and managing issues within the designated area of responsibility, and is responsible for managing work and multiple projects with overlapping tasks to meet objectives, deadlines, and assignments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

        • The Human Resource Generalist is responsible for supporting and implementing Human Resources administration of strategies, programs, processes, and policies among assigned departments, programs, and schools
        • Provide day-to-day HR administration of assigned HR functions; acts as initial HR contact; directs calls and inquiries to appropriate team members
        • Act as liaison between employees and people leaders to answer questions or concerns regarding university policies and practices
        • Recommend and develop employee relations practices to foster positive employer-employee relations
        • Coach people leaders  in performance management, employee relations, retention, and career development
        • Support supervisors and managers in addressing performance concerns, disciplinary actions, and policy interpretations.
        • Serve as an advisor to employees, supervisors, and administrators on workplace concerns, policies, and procedures.
        • Develop and maintain employee evaluation and development plans, including tracking performance evaluation completions and coaching managers on conducting performance reviews.
        • Develop and deliver training programs on workplace policies, conflict resolution, performance management, and related topics.
        • Maintain a continuous supervisor training program regarding the University’s policies and procedures, human resources practices, laws, and changes.
        • Collaborating with dedicated HR teams and colleagues in specialty administrative areas such as leaves, benefits, workers' compensation, recruitment, and HR projects and initiatives, to help provide the end-to-end HR solutions to meet the needs of faculty, staff, and students
        • Provides daily hands-on human resources expertise to the university in the areas of employee relations, recruiting and onboarding, employee development, training, compensation, benefits, organizational development, and more. Provides backup HR business support to other businesses locally as required.
        • Organize training sessions and workshops to help employees acquire new skills and knowledge relevant to their roles. Manage resources such as training materials, budgets, and external trainers to ensure effective delivery of development programs
        • Demonstrates solid understanding of the operations of university client groups as well as the needs and challenges of people leaders and individual contributors
        • Assist the HR Leadership Team in ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local employment law and compliance requirements
        • Prepares and maintains a variety of records, reports, and files related to specific projects and assignments; develops, prepares, and presents human resource metrics and related analysis. Gathers information and submits data for various external salary surveys.
        • Maintain employee personnel and recruitment records in accordance with applicable laws, protecting the confidentiality of records at all times
        • Partners with the Recruitment Team to ensure regulatory and University policies are being followed regarding compensation and compliant recruitment
        • May meet with hiring authorities and search committees to discuss hiring needs for regular and contracted employees, graduate assistants/management interns, and temporaries; coordinates timelines, advertising strategies, prepares job postings and advertisements, and interview questions
        • Liaise with University partners such as the Office of Budget and Finance, Payroll, Information Technology, and the Office of Equity and Title IX
        • Monitor and evaluate existing personnel procedures and policies related to human resources and make recommendations for changes as appropriate
        • Maintains physical and digital files for employees and their documents, benefits, and attendance records.
        • Collaborates with outside vendors, upper management, and employees to maintain University standards.
        • Assists, coordinates, and administers functional HR areas outside of regular assignment in the absence of team members assigned support to research, explain, and provide information, and respond to HR -related inquiries in a timely manner
        • Monitors and audits the accuracy of transactions in HR Management Systems to ensure proper interface with benefits and payroll functions.
        • Assist in the overall work of the department by providing backup support as directed
        • Performs Other Duties and Special Projects as Required/Assigned

        Qualification Guidelines

            Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

            Experience/Training/Education:

              • A Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, organizational development, or related field.
              • Three (3) years’ experience in a professional level in human resources

               Preferred

              • Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) Certified Professional (CP), Professional (PHR), or Senior Professional (SPHR) in Human Resources.
              • Bilingual in Spanish, oral and written.
              • Human Resources experience in an educational setting is highly desirable

              Knowledge and Skills:            

              • Analyze, evaluate, and devise solutions to a variety of complex challenges and issues and recommend possible resolution, and present detailed facts and recommendations verbally and in writing
              • Demonstrate sound, independent judgment in resolving problems and making decisions; have functional knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to human resource administration.
              • Thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures, knowledge of the functional area, and understanding of how work may affect other areas

               Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

              Working Conditions:

              Standard office and field settings. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

              Physical Demands: Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic device keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry, and/or move objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
