Position Title: Human Resources Generalist

Department: Human Resources and Training 

Grade Range/Job Status: Full Time /Exempt-Salaried

Reporting Relationship: Director of Human Resources

Supervisory Responsibilities: NA

Typical Schedule: Primarily M-F Days. Must occasionally be willing and able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the organization.


Position Summary

The Human Resources Generalist performs a wide range of human resources activities requiring a high level of confidentiality. This role’s primary responsibilities include new employee orientation, as well as engagement and recognition programming. Manages, coordinates, and leads Hammer & NER’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Responsible for an array of administrative and compliance related activities such as unemployment and worker’s compensation. As needed, supports talent recruitment, and acquisition, efforts to source, attract and engage an effective, diverse, and committed workforce for the organization. This role reports to the Director of Human Resources. Primary Duties and Responsibilities


1. Employee Engagement

• Responsible for developing and implementing sustainable employee rewards programs that acknowledge milestones, outstanding performance, and work anniversaries.? 

• Create and implement initiatives that support employee retention, recognition, and engagement. 

• Gather, analyze and interpret data and metrics to develop recommendations and strategies to facilitate positive employee relations and engagement. 

• Address employee feedback and developing ways to improve company operations. 

• Develops and recommends long and short-term development strategies aimed at meeting Hammer’s mission and goals, and which support key initiatives to promote, achieve and sustain a culture of exceptional employee engagement and overall excellence. 

• Leads new employee orientation programming.

• Manages, coordinates, and leads Hammer & NER’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in conjunction with the CHRO. 


2. Administration and Compliance

• Administer and manage all unemployment claims. Promptly respond to unemployment claim notification as needed. 

o Collect all employment-related information and have a thorough understanding of the situation.

o Provide the required information to Equifax within the appropriate timeline.

• Oversee the workers’ compensation program, instructing employees how to report an incident only or injury. Provide guidance throughout the process.

o Serve as the main point of contact with Hammer’s workers’ compensation broker and insurance provider.

o Lead the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperate in the preparation of material for insurance investigations.

o Participate in the development of safety and health policies, practices, and procedures.  Ensure OSHA compliance. Complete and post annual forms, 300A etc.

o Serve on the Hammer Safety Committee.  Recommend and implement safety strategies with the goal of reducing workplace injuries.

• Support TB compliance processes.

• Oversees and manages the Employee Auto Repair program.

• Responsible for ADA compliance and medical verification documentation as needed.

• Stay current with employee relations trends, regulations, and legal requirements. 


3. Talent Recruitment and Acquisition 

• Apply Hammer & NER’s recruitment and staffing strategies to attract, retain, and engage an effective and committed workforce for Hammer, ensuring processes comply with legal standards.

• Champion Hammer & NER’s core value of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) by promoting and following hiring processes for recruiting candidates who are mixed across lines of difference.

• Proofread, revise and edit job descriptions in preparation for posting.

• Create and maintain external job postings and advertisements. 

• Track applications in Hammer & NER’s Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

• Read applications and review applicants with hiring managers to match experience with position-related requirements and essential functions.

• Utilize established tools for deterring unconscious bias in recruitment processes.

• Communicate and schedule interviews with candidates, following Hammer’s standards for written communication.

• Write behavioral-based interview questions with consistent formatting across all positions.

• Lead and conduct interviews with candidates via Teams and in-person.

• Discuss final candidates with the hiring manager and provide guidance on making the final hiring decision.

• Make offer calls, complete background checks, write offer letters and communicate important onboarding information to the new hire. 

• Maintain knowledge of local, state, and federal employment laws and regulations.

• Create, implement, and maintain new employee onboarding and orientation processes.

• Track new hires’ upcoming start dates and provide hiring managers with start date and contact information.

• Welcome new hires on their first day and assist in complete their new hire documents. 

• Process new hires in Hammer & NER’s HRIS system (Paylocity). 

• Serves as primary backup for Recruiting & Onboarding Specialists. 


Essential Knowledge and Qualifications 

• Intermediate Human Resources Generalist experience required working for a mid-sized organization.  Formal, informal, and cross-disciplinary experiences will be considered.

• Demonstrated experience leading employee engagement efforts and initiatives.

• Demonstrated experience creating, leading, and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including fostering an inclusive workplace culture and partnering with leaders to promote equitable practices.

• Experience responding to unemployment claims.

• Knowledge of worker’s compensation, OSHA regulations and organizational health and safety policies and procedures.

• Experience building and executing proactive sourcing strategies for hard to fill industry-specific positions.

• Experience and commitment to sourcing and recruiting candidates mixed across lines of difference.

• Experience establishing trust and maintaining effective relationships with internal hiring managers.

• Willingness to manage multiple priorities to ensure work is completed in a timely and productive manner.

• Experience exercising professional discretion and maintaining confidentiality regarding all human resources related matters.

• Must demonstrate the ability to work diplomatically with a wide variety of people, possess public speaking ability, strong organizational skills and complete tasks with a high attention to detail.

• Ability to perform   

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google applications.

• Requires a valid driver’s license, access to a personal auto and willingness to drive as needed to our east and west metro offices, residences, and other locations as needed.

• Physical demands include frequent use of a telephone, frequent use of repetitive motion activities including typing on a computer keyboard and?the ability to work for extended periods of time at a desk and computer.  Standing for long periods of time when teaching or presenting.

• Experience, ability, and commitment to working with individuals and teams that are mixed across lines of difference such as race, gender-identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class, and immigrant status.
