Job Summary:

This HR Generalist - Benefits and Leaves role is responsible for managing the processes that involve health and welfare benefits, leaves, injuries, safety, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-related cases for the agency. The person filling the role develops and executes processes to ensure all of these circumstances are handled well and leaders of programs are educated to understand the nuances of these cases for adequate risk management. This individual will also serve as a lead thought partner to center equity, diversity and inclusion in every facet of the agency Human Resources function.
 

Daily tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Receiving, processing, and administering all requests for FMLA, Maine Family and Medical Leave, and other medical leaves of absence.
  • Partnering with employees and the disability insurance company to manage all Short- and Long-Term Disability claims.
  • Receiving and processing all requests for Reasonable Accommodation under the ADA and partnering with management during decision-making.
  • Reporting all workplace injuries to the Worker’s Compensation insurance company, monitoring all claims, and assisting employees with getting back to work.
  • Managing connections with all benefits carriers.
  • Developing and maintaining effective open enrollment processes that ensures all benefits eligible employees are educated and enrolled for the new plan year.
  • Developing and managing effective new hire benefits enrollment.
  • Collaborating with benefits broker and carriers as needed for satisfactory claims processes and troubleshooting issues with claims. 

This role will report to the Vice President of Human Resources and work collaboratively with operations, finance, and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment on key initiatives, philosophy and approach. 

Schedule: This position is a 40 hours/week, hourly position

Location:  South Portland, ME

Potential to become a hybrid position; but this role will start with the expectation to be onsite, in the office.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field of study preferred; Associate Degree with 3 years of related experience required. 
  • PHR or SHRM Certification(s), preferred, not required.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in Human Resources, supporting talent acquisition, recruiting, onboarding processes, and/or related HR functions.
  • Demonstrated high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products, to include, Excel, Word, and Power Point is required. 
  • Demonstrated skills in building relationships, customer service, and meeting target goals.
  • Prior experience with relational databases, with preference given to experience with HRIS/ATS systems preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Prior experience working in a busy office with multiple priorities preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background, child protective service check & sex offender check.
  • Must not be on the state or federal suspension and disbarment list.
  • Normal office conditions such as sitting, with occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, typing and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Driving may be necessary to attend meetings and trainings but is not a primary and essential job responsibility.
