  • $25.00 per hour during the 22-week training program; $40.42 per hour effective the start date of police officer.
  • Benefits Eligible Date of Hire

  • Located at Eden Prairie City Center (8080 Mitchell Road Eden Prairie, MN 55344)
  • Rotating shift (must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Police Officers-In-Training will be promoted to Police Officer upon successful completion of the Minnesota Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training Program (ICPOET).

Responsibilities

As a police officer-in-training, work responsibilities will include participating in a variety of activities and work duties to learn more about being a police officer such as ride-alongs, department training,  bookings, reports, summons/citations, staff meetings, recovery and inventory of lost property, etc.

As a police officer, their role in the Patrol Division will be to protect and serve the community of Eden Prairie by providing quality services and law enforcement customized to meet the needs of the community. The police officer primary areas of impact includes:

  • Proactively patrols the community for potential public safety issues. Uses sound judgment and critical thinking to monitor and deter potential crime.
  • Responds to and documents calls for police service such as reported crimes or suspicious activity, medical emergencies, and traffic accidents.
  • Enforces laws, ordinances, and codes with a special emphasis on traffic enforcement.
  • Investigates crimes including the collection and preservation of evidence, interviewing victims, suspects, and witnesses, preparing related reports and court testimony.
  • Educates residents, schools, and businesses about public safety-related issues.
  • Secondary assignments are available for officers through a selection process after their first 12 months on the job. Secondary assignments include: K9 officer, SWAT Team member, Field Training Officer, Use of Force Instructor, Weapons Systems Armorer, Crisis Negotiator, Youth Diversion Officer, Crime Scene Tech Unit Officer, Domestic Abuse Response Team member, Crisis Intervention Techniques Team member, Reserve Unit Coordinator, Adult Investigator, Juvenile Liaison Officer, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Pilot, Peer Support Team, Police Explorer Advisor, and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Requirements

  • Two- or four-year degree required.
  • Two years of work experience required. Full-time work experience is preferred.
  • Technology proficiency and experience required.
  • During the 22-week ICPOET program, must have the ability to commit to attend all classes, study and complete all coursework. Commitment is 40 hours per week Monday through Friday.
  • Maintain Peace Officer Training Board (P.O.S.T.) once received through the ICPOET program.
  • Must commit to two years of employment with the Eden Prairie Police Department following the promotion to Police Officer or pay back the costs of tuition paid by the department for academics training and/or skills course. Failure to successfully complete Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board licensing exam at the end of the training program may result in termination.
  • Approximately 85% of the time is spent in the field on patrol.  Officers are required to carry a firearm, take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective body armor. While on patrol or at crime scenes, Officers may have exposure to injury, trauma, angry or violent individuals, animal bites, blood-borne and air-borne pathogens, traffic accidents, visual and emotional trauma, toxic chemicals, adverse road and weather conditions, and other hazardous conditions. Incumbent spends a large portion of each day in a patrol vehicle, frequently exiting and entering vehicle. Incumbents must be able to climb ladders, walk or run on uneven surfaces. Required to lift up to 150 lbs. Must be able to pass gas mask fit testing. While on patrol, continual attention to detail in monitoring surroundings is required. A high level of attention to detail and deadlines is required in completing reports and paperwork. Must be able to meet the physical demands/requirements of P.O.S.T. to qualify for and maintain status as a licensed peace officer.
  • Required to attend Emergency Medical Response (EMR) training and in addition are encouraged to obtain EMT National Certification.
  • Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, work history verification, education verification, pre-employment physical exam, and driver’s license check (must have valid driver’s license and excellent driving record).
