Job Description

THE ROLE OF THE CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICER (CHRO)
The CHRO will lead a human resources team focused on supporting the university community and achieving excellence across a broad range of functions, including talent acquisition; staff assessment, management, and development; performance review systems; leadership and organizational development; HRIS; compensation and benefits; and change management.


The CHRO will serve as part of the President’s Executive Cabinet and is accountable for the planning, development, and implementation of university-wide initiatives and strategies that support employee engagement, success, and customer service excellence. This position holds executive responsibility for the design, development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive Human Resources programs for the University. The CHRO will be a university-wide thinker and collaborator, working with other senior leaders in leading and supporting change management initiatives across the Miami community.


The inaugural CHRO will be charged with implementing a consolidated Human Resources structure, bringing together services and operations previously housed within other university divisions. The Human Resource functions have recently been realigned to follow a model recommended after extensive review and study by Huron Consulting, however the final configuration of the functions listed below remains flexible.

The CHRO will partner and work closely with all members of the President’s Executive Cabinet.


OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
The inaugural CHRO will lead the human resources function in cultivating and enhancing a culture of cohesion and collaboration, employee excellence, engagement, and leadership for Miami. This leader will be a changemaker, have an excellent strategic and operational track record across the human resources discipline, and have proven experience in supporting high-performance teams in which each member is valued and respected. The CHRO will develop and maintain strong relationships and trust at every level of the University, able to translate stakeholder needs into dynamic programs, practices, and procedures, and influence leadership, leading to best practices that drive performance and human capital impact across the University.

The CHRO will have opportunities to:

  • Develop a strategy and vision aligned with Miami’s mission and priorities to enhance internal competencies, improve service delivery, and streamline processes.
  • Evaluate the operating model recommendations and determine the optimal structure for consolidating HR functions into a highly functional, streamlined HR organization to achieve maximum efficiency, superior service delivery, and optimal collaboration.
  • Develop a comprehensive talent acquisition strategy, to include an Employee Value Proposition, aligned with Miami University’s brand, to attract talent, and support the academic mission. Include considerations for the student employment experience to meet future workforce needs.
  • Develop future state business processes and SOPs in alignment with new technology. Implement standard reporting, key metrics, and service level agreements to better understand HR related costs and eliminate redundancies.
  • Understand Workday capabilities, establish data governance and audit standards, clean up legacy data, identify reporting needs, and provide tailored education and training for different user types.
  • Define metrics and establish a regular cadence of reporting on key performance indicators to align with HR strategy. Provide HR staff with the training and tools to access, understand, and interpret the data to support decision-making.
  • Create a standardized onboarding process for new hires to enhance orientation, engagement, and alignment with the Miami brand with a focus on employee experience and clear connection to department and unit level orientation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor degree, and significant and extensive experience in the field of Human Resources are required. Experience in higher education, and an advanced degree or certification in the field is preferred.

  • Progressively responsible leadership of a human resources function within complex, multi-layered organizations, preferably experience within the higher education sector, and with change management;
  • Experience leading a “best-in-class” human resources team and able to demonstrate significant change, supporting employees through trust, transparency, and advocacy;
  • Experience analyzing and solving complex employee relations and organizational design/change management issues;
  • Experience leading human resource units including: employee relations, organizational design and development, information systems, talent acquisition, learning and development, performance management, benefits and compensation;
  • Strong business skills in the strategic recruitment, support, development, and advancement of employees;
  • The ability to lead by influence and example as a “down to earth,” practical leader who understands the culture of academia and how to make change happen, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and challenges;
  • Data driven with strong analytical and critical thinking skills and a high degree of IQ and EQ; with a proven ability to apply these skills in decision making;
  • Ability to modernize structures while honoring the University history and traditions;
  • Collaborative leader with a demonstrated ability to adapt to changing demands and needs of the community;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive presentation and public speaking skills;
  • A strategic leader with experience in the development and implementation of effective strategies, policies and practices to advance the organization
  • Outstanding listening skills and willingness to challenge the status quo;
  • Ability to establish and lead the execution of priorities in a highly collaborative and complex environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Title IX, and discrimination investigations;
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulatory compliance requirements.
