As a member of the Human Resources team, the HR Generalist is responsible for supporting a positive and engaging employee experience across the full employee life cycle by providing guidance to employees and leaders regarding HR programs.

This role contributes to the success of Johnstone Supply by delivering responsive HR support in areas such as recruitment, onboarding, total rewards, compliance, and employee relations, aligned with business needs and company culture.

Position responsibilities:

  • Employee Relations & Engagement: Act as a culture ambassador and primary HR contact for employees and leaders. Support performance management, conduct concern intake and investigations, and guide leaders through employee relations issues. Champion engagement initiatives and employee recognition programs.
  • Recruitment & Onboarding: Own the full-cycle recruitment process—partnering with hiring managers, and promoting our employer brand. Deliver an exceptional onboarding experience through structured coordination and personalized new hire support.
  • Payroll, Benefits & Leave Administration: Support payroll accuracy, respond to leave and benefit inquiries, and assist with case management including workers' compensation. Promote total rewards programs and provide education to employees and managers.
  • Systems & Compliance: Maintain accurate employee data in HRIS/HCM systems, ensure compliance with privacy standards, and support system users with training and troubleshooting. Respond promptly to employment verifications, claims, and regulatory requests.

Position requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S./B.A.) in Human Resources Management or related discipline; at least 3 years of experience as an HR Generalist or HR Specialist, with proficiency in at least 3 HR disciplines (employee relations, performance management, employment law, policy interpretations, talent acquisition, HRIS/HCM, payroll administration, compensation and benefits, leave management); or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  
  • General knowledge of Human Resource management principles, including hiring, training, and orienting, coaching, and evaluating employees.
  • General knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations, particular focus on federal and state leave laws, ADA and EEO.
  • General knowledge of employee health and welfare benefit plans and administration.
  • Strong technical acumen and experience with various HRIS/HCM systems and data interfaces; Previous experience working in UKG, ADP, or similar platforms is preferred, but not required for this role. 
  • Ability to use Microsoft office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
  • Organization skills: developing and using systems for organizing and keeping track of information and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact and communicate with various internal and external customers and stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required; Ability to communicate information across different individuals, departments, and external parties.
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in English in both verbal and written formats is required for this role; Ability to communicate in Spanish is preferred, but not required for this role. 
  • Ability to commit to a 20% travel requirement. Travel is done by motor vehicle, and visits store locations within the assigned area.
