Summary:

The HR Generalist is an entry-level position that provides operational HR expertise to all team members in a busy retail/c-store environment by assisting with the administration of the full Team Member life cycle to include recruiting, hiring, onboarding, compliance, policy enforcement, performance, engagement, retention and offboarding. The Human Resources Generalist performs administrative tasks and services in support of effective and efficient operations of the Toot’n Totum Human Resources Department. This position also serves as a resource and advocate to all applicants, candidates and Team Members in the assigned client group for HR & employee-related questions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate as a direct point of contact for team members of the assigned client group seeking HR partnership/consultation with regards to key HR processes, policies, and programs. 
  • Answer frequently asked questions from applicants and Team Members relative to standard policies/procedures, hiring processes and general HR inquiries; refers more complex questions to appropriate individuals on the HR team. 
  • Perform routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance management; productivity, recognition and morale; engagement and retention.
  • Process and administer Team Member employment life cycle changes in HR software and ensures accurate recordkeeping to document all changes to Team Member profiles.
  • Manage drug screen process and results for assigned client group.  
  • Manage unemployment claims and state issued unemployment chargebacks for assigned client group, ensuring accurate documentation for all claims.
  • Process each new hire and administer E-Verify process for assigned client group.
  • Periodically engage in field visits to support HR efforts around turnover discussions (exit interviews, stay interviews), employee engagement and periodic investigations.
  • Handle employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, escalating complex and/or sensitive matters to the Human Resources Manager.
  • May assist with Team Member disciplinary meetings, investigations, and terminations, working directly with Managers and partnering with the Human Resources Manager.
  • Manage and audit accuracy and integrity of all data entered the HRIS systems ensuring credible information is available on a timely basis, including but not limited to all terminations, promotions, transfer data, rate changes, and job codes. 
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes and new technologies in human resources, talent management and employment law.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations along with recommended best practices; assists HR leadership in reviewing policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Collaborate with other HR Generalists, HR Manager and HR Director to research, develop and implement effective recruiting and staffing strategies to attract a diverse pool of qualified and capable talent for the organization.
  • Collaborate with field leaders to understand skills and competencies required for openings; recruit, interview and facilitate the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions as requested; may collaborate with managers to identify and draft detailed job descriptions and hiring criteria.
  • Support pre-screen application process as needed and select qualified candidates for further review; may assist with the interview process by attending phone, virtual or live interviews with hiring managers or as part of the pre-screen process.
  • Collaborate with the hiring manager and other HR staff during the offer process, identifying salary ranges, start dates, etc.
  • Participate in job fairs and recruiting events.
  • Influence, support, and facilitate organizational change, continuous improvement, and communication.
  • Establish and foster relationships with management, new hires, team members and the Human Resources team that will enable the HR function to be viewed as an integral part of the business.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one-year experience in Human Resources department with experience in employee relations is required.
  • A minimum of one-year experience in Human Resources administration in a multi-state, multi-company environment is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, talk/hear, push/pull, climb, bend/stoop, crouch/kneel/crawl, balance, twist/reach, carry, grasp with hands, squat, drive and use keyboard. 
  • Lifting Requirements: Lift/pull up to 20lbs.
  • Hearing Requirements: Ability to hear alarms, communication equipment, verbal instructions, office machinery such as fax machines, lobby doorbell, phones ringing, etc.
  • Cognitive Requirements: Complex reading, writing and math skills. Complex speech skills; must be able to speak, read, write & understand the English language, clerical tasks, memorization, analytical skills, function under stress & make independent decisions. 
  • Vision Requirements: General vision requirements in addition to close vision (<20 inches), Distance Vision (>20 feet), color vision and peripheral vision.
  • Noise Levels: Normal (<85dB) noise levels.   
  • Repetitive Motion(s): Regularly & repetitively use both feet and both hands.
  • Environmental Factors: Regular, general working conditions include prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer and items consistent with a general office working environment. Occasional infrequent working conditions when visiting retail/field sites may include slippery conditions not created by weather, slippery floors, hot grease, concentrated soaps & cleaning solutions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, Oxygen/Acetylene Cylinders, CO2 Cylinders, electrical equipment, vibration, possible flying debris, flashing/strobing lighting and working around vehicles in motion.
