Human Resources Generalist  

 

Overview 

The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting day-to-day HR operations with a primary focus on benefits administration, open enrollment, and HR data integrity. This position serves as the subject-matter expert for employee benefits, ensuring programs are administered accurately, compliantly, and with a high level of service to employees. This role partners closely with the HR team, Payroll team, and external vendors.  

 

Location: Indianapolis, IN  

Work Schedule: Our office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm ET. This role is hybrid, providing 1 remote day a week.  

Reports to: COO 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Benefits Administration & Open Enrollment 

  • Administer all employee benefit programs, including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, life, disability, retirement, and wellness offerings 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee benefit questions and education throughout the year 
  • Coordinate annual open enrollment, including employee communications, system setup, vendor coordination, and enrollment audits 
  • Process qualifying life events, enrollments, terminations, and changes in a timely and accurate manner 
  • Reconcile benefit invoices with payroll and vendor reports; research and resolve discrepancies 
  • Partner with Payroll to ensure benefit deductions are accurate and properly maintained 

 

Compliance, Leave & Risk Support 

  • Administer and track employee leaves related to FMLA, STD, LTD, and workers’ compensation, ensuring compliance with applicable laws 
  • Coordinate with leave administrators, insurance carriers, and internal stakeholders 
  • Assist with ACA reporting support, ERISA documentation, and  benefit notices 
  • Maintain benefit-related documentation in compliance with federal and state regulations 
  • Support workers’ compensation claims administration and  OSHA documentation 

 

HRIS, Data Management & Reporting 

  • Maintain accurate employee data within HRIS and benefits systems 
  • Enter, audit, and validate employee benefit and demographic data across systems 
  • Run routine and ad-hoc reports related to benefits, headcount, and compliance 
  • Support benefits data  for audits, renewals, and vendor reporting 
  • Identify opportunities to improve data accuracy, system efficiency, and documentation 

 

HR Operations & Process Improvement 

  • Maintain employee files and benefit documentation in accordance with legal and company standards 
  • Conduct periodic audits of employee records to ensure compliance and consistency 
  • Support HR projects related to benefits, compliance, and HR operations 
  • Provide backup support for full-cycle payroll processes as needed, partnering with HR leadership, Payroll, and HRIS to ensure accuracy and continuity 
  • Assist with updating benefit materials, policies, and internal documentation 
  • Recommend process improvements and efficiencies within benefits and HR administration 

 

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support business needs and contribute to team success. 

 

Qualifications 

Education & Experience 

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience) 
  • 2+ years of experience in an HR Generalist, Benefits Administrator, or HR Operations role 
  • Hands-on experience administering employee benefit programs and open enrollment 
  • Experience working within an HRIS, preferably Rippling, to manage employee data, benefits elections, and reporting 
  • HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) preferred 

 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong working knowledge of employee benefits, including health, retirement, and leave programs 
  • Understanding of relevant employment and benefits laws (ACA, ERISA, FMLA, COBRA) 
  • Experience working within HRIS and benefits administration platforms 
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and follow-through skills 
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality 
  • Clear, professional communication skills with a service-oriented mindset 
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating across teams
