About Us

The Plex is San Jose's premier destination for family fun, fitness, sports, dining, and events. With 240,000 square feet of entertainment space under one roof, our three operating businesses employ 300+ team members and offer everything from an arcade and wall climbing to sushi, tapas, and a vast beer wall — open 7 days a week. We're looking for an approachable, collaborative human resources generalist to join our growing San Jose team.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the HR Generalist supports the day-to-day HR operations and partners with departmental managers on employee-related matters. The primary focus is recruitment and onboarding, with key responsibilities in leave administration, benefits coordination, HRIS optimization, compliance, and HR administration.

The ideal candidate is patient, collaborative, and understands that in a smaller organization, HR is a true partner to managers — providing ongoing guidance and support while fostering accountability. You're comfortable coaching a manager through a situation and knowing when to step back and let them take ownership.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Manage full-cycle recruitment: posting ads, extending offers, initiating background checks, and ensuring compliance with hiring regulations. May assist with screening and interviews upon manager request.
  • Oversee new hire onboarding, ensuring all required paperwork, documentation, and system entries are completed accurately.

Leave Administration & Benefits Coordination

  • Coordinate leaves of absence, sick time, workers' compensation, and ADA interactive process / return-to-work accommodations in compliance with federal and California state regulations.
  • Support employee benefits administration including medical, dental, and vision enrollment, qualifying life events, and reconciling insurance invoices against payroll deductions.

Employee Relations

  • Assist the HR Director with employee relations matters as needed, including workplace investigations, conflict resolution, and exit interviews.

HRIS & Process Optimization

  • Maintain accurate employee records in Paycom and identify opportunities to automate HR processes and improve system efficiency.
  • Ensure proper Personnel Action Forms (PAFs) are completed and processed; recommend new workflows as needed.

Compliance & Training

  • Assign and monitor mandatory training completion by department; provide updates to managers for follow-up.
  • Monitor work permit status and coordinate with managers to ensure scheduling compliance.
  • Stay current on California employment laws and assist with policy development and audits.

HR Administration

  • Prepare and distribute HR documentation including offer letters, policy updates, and compliance notices.
  • Process employee terminations and manage employment status for inactive employees, including outreach for availability or initiating separation as appropriate.
  • Compile HR metrics and reports to support leadership decision-making.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of human resources generalist experience or similar role.
  • Working knowledge of California employment law (FMLA/CFRA, ADA, workers' compensation, wage & hour).
  • HRIS experience required; Paycom strongly preferred.
  • Collaborative, service-oriented mindset with the ability to build trust with managers at all levels.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged sitting with extended computer and monitor use.
  • Intermittent standing and walking.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 20 lbs.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $70,500 – $74,000 annually, depending on experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and 401(k)
  • Free/discounted facility membership and food & beverage discounts
  • Professional development and training opportunities
  • A fun, dynamic work environment with the opportunity to make a real impact
