POSITION TITLE: Human Resources Generalist
REPORTS TO: Director of Human Resources
DIRECT REPORTS: None
FLSA STATUS: Exempt; regular full-time; employment-at-will position.
SCHEDULE: The work schedule will generally conform to that of a full-time Monday–Friday 40-hour-per-week schedule to be performed within the Center’s hours of operation.
PURPOSE: The Human Resources (HR) Generalist is responsible for supporting a variety of HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, benefits, compliance, and payroll. This role ensures HR operations are carried out smoothly and efficiently while providing excellent internal service to employees and leaders across the organization. The ideal candidate is not only knowledgeable in HR practices but also compassionate, approachable, and committed to supporting employees with care and professionalism.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a point of contact for employee questions regarding HR policies, procedures, and benefits
- Support the full recruitment cycle including job postings, screening, interviews, and reference checks
- Coordinate onboarding and orientation for new hires
- Administer employee benefits including enrollment, changes, and open enrollment periods
- Maintain and update employee records in the HRIS and ensure data accuracy
- Support employee relations matters and ensure timely and confidential follow-up
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO)
- Assist with performance management processes and documentation
- Help develop and implement HR policies and procedures
- Coordinate employee training, recognition, and engagement initiatives
- Process employee status changes such as new hires, promotions, transfers, and terminations
- Demonstrate empathy, respect, and discretion in all employee interactions
- Other duties as assigned
Payroll Responsibilities:
- Process biweekly (or applicable schedule) payroll in coordination with Finance and/or third-party provider
- Ensure accurate entry of hours worked, paid time off, wage changes, and deductions
- Review timesheets and resolve discrepancies in collaboration with supervisors
- Maintain payroll records in compliance with company policy and legal requirements
- Respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees
- Prepare and distribute payroll reports as needed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Associate’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Applied Science or related field required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 1–3 years of experience in human resources, people relations, customer service, or similar experience.
- Direct involvement in payroll processing preferred.
- Familiarity with payroll systems and HRIS platforms (e.g., ADP, Paycom, Paylocity) preferred.
- Working knowledge of labor laws and payroll regulations.
- High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

- Remaining stationary, such as standing or sitting, for prolonged periods.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, or fingers.
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
- Frequently moving from one worksite to another to accomplish tasks.?

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The environment is a typical office environment. While on location, work is generally performed indoors with ambient room temperatures, lighting, and traditional office equipment. This position may require travel to multiple worksites including other offices.

SALARY RANGE FOR THIS POSITION: Salary commensurate with experience and Kanza MHGC salary structure.
PRIMARY LOCATION: Hiawatha Main Office, with the ability to work remotely up to one day a week as approved by supervisor.
