Human Resources Generalist (Part-Time, Hybrid)


Summary

The Human Resources Generalist opening is a part-time, hybrid role working two days on-site at the shelter in Truckee and one day from home. This role supports approximately 40 employees across multiple locations in California.


The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is hiring a self-directed HR professional who takes pride in owning and optimizing day-to-day human resources operations in a mission-driven environment. This role serves as a key driver of core HR functions, bringing expertise in California leave and compliance laws while leading programs such as full-cycle recruitment and onboarding, employee relations, and HRIS administration. The ideal candidate is proactive, organized, and able to operate independently while fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage employee onboarding and offboarding, including offer letters, new hire paperwork, orientations, and exit processes.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential personnel files and HR records.
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee questions related to policies, benefits, payroll documentation, and general HR matters.
  • Address workplace concerns and foster a respectful, inclusive environment.
  • Facilitate resolution of employee issues through listening, investigation, and collaboration.
  • Promote open communication and trust between employees and management.
  • Manage employee relations processes, including investigations, documentation and coordination with leadership.
  • Oversee recruitment efforts, including job postings, interview scheduling, reference checks, and hiring documentation.
  • Benefits administration, including enrollment, changes, and open enrollment management.
  • Guide compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Assist with workers’ compensation claims, incident reporting, and required labor postings.
  • Update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook as needed.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture aligned with HSTT’s mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4–7 years of progressive human resources experience, including employee relations and California employment law compliance.
  • Seeking a self-directed professional who can operate independently and take ownership of key initiatives.
  • Extensive knowledge of California employment laws, specifically CA leave laws (PDL, PFL, CFRA), and HR best practices (FLSA, ADA, FMLA, EEO, harassment prevention).
  • Demonstrated experience handling employee relations, including workplace concerns and complaint resolution.
  • Experience with recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and employee documentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to work effectively in a mission-driven, emotionally demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to HSTT’s mission and values.
  • Ability to balance compassion for employees with organizational accountability and compliance.


Schedule

  • 20–25 hours per week with opportunity to increase
  • HSTT offers flexibility regarding workdays, provided hours are completed between Tuesday and Friday.


Physical Requirements (must be able to)

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods during the workday.
  • Ability to work primarily in an office environment, with occasional presence in shelter, clinic, or animal care areas.
  • Ability to use a computer (Google Workspace), phone, and other standard office equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 15–25 pounds (e.g., files, office supplies, materials for trainings or meetings).
  • Ability to navigate stairs, hallways, and multiple work areas as needed.
  • Ability to tolerate occasional exposure to animal-related environments, including noise, odors, and allergens.

Compensation

Hourly: $35–$40 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime in accordance with California law.
