Job Summary
The Human Resources Manager (HRM), reporting to the Chief People Officer, has a key role in fostering a positive work environment by managing employee relations, ensuring compliance with employment policies, and serving as a trusted advisor to management and staff. This role provides backup payroll processing support, collaborates on compensation projects, and ensures HR operations align with organizational goals and compliance requirements. The HR Manager will work closely with program leadership to support staff across the organization. The Human Resources Manager will be an active listener and provide high quality customer service and respond by exhibiting cross-cultural awareness with the ability to promote and contribute to an equitable and inclusive anti-racist organizational culture and environment.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Employee Relations:
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee relations matters, handling concerns with professionalism and in accordance with organizational policies.
- Provide guidance to supervisors on employee performance, disciplinary actions, and workplace conflict resolution.
- Conduct investigations into employee concerns ensuring fair and timely resolution.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, and EEO guidelines.
- Assist with updating HR policies, ensuring alignment with best practices in social services.
HR Operations & Employee Experience:
- Manage offboarding processes, ensuring smooth transitions for staff.
- Assist with recruitment, retention, benefits administration, employee engagement initiatives, and HR technology improvements.
- Utilize staff survey results to recommend organizational improvements.
Compensation & HR Data Support:
- Support compensation review projects, assisting in salary benchmarking, job evaluations, and alignment with salary guidelines.
- Assist with pay equity analyses and maintain competitive and fair compensation structures.
Payroll Processing (Backup Support):
- Act as the backup for payroll processing, ensuring timely and accurate payroll execution during absences of the payroll administrator.
- Verify payroll records, address discrepancies, and ensure proper payroll compliance.
- Assist in resolving payroll-related inquiries from employees in collaboration with supervisors and Human Resources team.
HR Projects and Initiatives:
- Assist in the development and implementation of HR initiatives and projects.
- Support the Chief People Officer and Human Resources Director in strategic planning and organizational development efforts.
- Participate in HR team meetings and contribute to the overall HR strategy.
Performs all other duties as assigned and as required.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of HR experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
- Proficiency in HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Certification in Human Resources (e.g., PHR, SHRM-CP) is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Employee Relations Management: Handle workplace conflicts, conduct investigations, and foster a positive work environment.
- Problem Solving: Evaluate complex situations to make informed HR decisions that align with organizational goals.
- Employment Law & Compliance: Understand FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, and other labor regulations.
- Payroll & Compensation: Familiarity with payroll processing, wage laws, and salary benchmarking approaches (e.g., Korn Ferry, Quatt).
- HRIS & Data: Proficiency in HR technology platforms (e.g., ADP, Paycom, UKG) for payroll, record-keeping, and reporting.
- Ethical Judgment & Integrity: Handle sensitive employee information with discretion and professionalism.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey HR policies, procedures, and guidance effectively to staff and leadership.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with an ability to manage deadlines, multiple projects, and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to manage relationships with tact and discretion and has a strong commitment to handling confidential information with discretion.
- Must be resourceful, self-motivated, and proactive.
