Position Summary:

 

The Human Resources Manager provides hands-on HR leadership and operational support to DAWN staff, ensuring compliance with employment laws, strengthening workplace systems, and fostering a respectful and professional organizational culture. This role supports the full employee lifecycle, including navigating leave requests, participating in disciplinary processes, assisting with annual performance evaluations, reviewing and updating personnel policies and handbooks, and leading workplace trainings where time allows.

The HR Manager serves as a neutral and trusted resource, balancing the needs of management and all staff while grounding decisions in DAWN’s policies, procedures, and organizational values. This position navigates employee grievances and workplace concerns through an objective, policy-centered approach, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally sound application of agency standards. By maintaining neutrality and focusing on what best supports the agency as a whole, the HR Manager promotes accountability, transparency, and a healthy, mission-aligned work environment.

HR Manager handles day-to-day employee relations; ED makes final decisions on terminations and policy exceptions/changes.  HR Manager supports both management and staff as it relates to HR matters.

 

Your compensation and benefits package include the following:

  • You will earn .05 hours of vacation per hour worked.
  • You will earn .046 hours of sick time per hour worked.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Human Resources Operations (priority)

  • Provide day-to-day HR support to staff and supervisors. 
  • Handle employee grievances and support conflict resolution in alignment with DAWN policies. 
  • Guide managers through documentation and corrective action. 
  • Support navigation of leave requests (medical, family, and other protected leaves), PTO, and related compliance. 
  • Assist with annual performance evaluation processes and provide guidance on goal setting and feedback. 
  • Conduct personnel actions that may include investigations, performance improvement plans, and terminations as needed. 



Policies, Compliance & Best Practices (priority)

  • Review, update, and help implement personnel policies and employee handbook content. 
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws. 
  • Support leadership with risk management and HR compliance initiatives.  



Projects & Administrative Support 

  • Maintain confidential personnel files and HR documentation. 
  • Coordinate with and lend support to hiring manager and office manager on job descriptions, postings, screenings and interview processes as needed.



Other Duties (as time permits)

  • Assist with various HR-related projects as assigned. 
  • Assist with research on job leveling, pay structure, market pricing and coordinate with Executive Director and Director of Finance on implementation.
  • Provide training to staff on professional workplace decorum, agency policies, and HR-related topics during staff meetings or in-service days. 
  • Support organizational initiatives related to culture, retention, and staff wellbeing. 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Strong working knowledge of HR best practices and employment law. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. 
  • Ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism. 
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through. 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); HRIS experience a plus. 


Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred (equivalent experience considered). 
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive HR experience required. 
  • Experience supporting employee relations, disciplinary processes, and performance management. 
  • Prior experience in nonprofit or human services environments strongly preferred. 


Work Environment & Requirements 

  • This is an in-person position based in Kent, WA (20 hours per week). 
  • Must be able to pass a Washington State background check.
