The Learning and Development Manager is responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving the company’s learning and development strategy. This role leads company-wide training initiatives, structured orientation and onboarding programs, leadership development efforts, and digital learning content creation.
The Learning and Development Manager ensures all learning programs align with business objectives, operational standards, safety requirements, and the company’s culture and values. This position combines strategic planning, instructional design, facilitation, and Learning Management System (LMS) administration to support employee performance, engagement, and retention.
Scope of the Position
The Learning and Development Manager supports 250+ employees across 5+ locations in Alabama and Tennessee and manages a team of up to three (3) employees. The position is based at the Huntsville Meridian Street location and requires up to 25% travel to job sites and company locations.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Learning Strategy & Program Management
- Develop, implement, and track annual learning and development initiatives aligned with company goals.
- Conduct organization-wide training needs assessments to identify skills and knowledge gaps and recommend effective solutions.
- Establish and maintain structured learning plans and career development pathways for all positions.
- Create and deliver an annual training calendar outlining required and developmental training.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of learning programs and implement continuous improvement strategies.
- Prepare and present reports to senior leadership on learning participation, compliance, outcomes, and return on investment (ROI).
Orientation & Onboarding
- Continuously improve a structured company-wide orientation program.
- Lead and conduct new hire orientation sessions to ensure employees understand company culture, policies, safety expectations, and performance standards.
- Develop and manage a comprehensive onboarding program supporting employees through their first 30-60-90 days.
- Partner with department leaders to ensure job-specific onboarding and skills training are completed successfully.
- Track onboarding progress and measure early retention, engagement, and performance outcomes.
- Ensure onboarding processes reinforce company values, safety standards, and operational expectations.
Instructional Design & Digital Learning
- Design and develop professional training presentations and learning materials aligned with company branding and instructional best practices.
- Create original presentation content using tools such as Canva, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other digital design platforms.
- Convert instructor-led and existing presentation materials into engaging voiceover-based e-learning modules.
- Record, edit, and embed voiceover narration into training presentations.
- Export and publish courses in LMS-compatible formats (e.g., SCORM or equivalent).
- Upload, test, publish, and maintain courses within the Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring functionality, tracking accuracy, and reporting integrity.
- Ensure digital learning content is visually engaging, clear, accurate, and aligned with company standards.
- Continuously evaluate learning technologies and recommend enhancements to improve learner engagement and retention.
Leadership Development & Facilitation
- Support emerging leader and Wilson Lumber Grows management development initiatives.
- Host train-the-trainer sessions for internal subject matter experts.
- Foster an inclusive, engaging learning environment that encourages participation and knowledge retention.
Compliance & Safety Training
- Partner with business leaders and the Health and Safety Representative to ensure all required safety and compliance training is administered and documented.
- Ensure training programs meet applicable regulatory and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate training documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
Position Qualifications
- Proven ability to manage the full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate).
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering structured orientation and onboarding programs.
- Experience creating professional training presentations and digital learning content.
- Proficiency in Canva, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other content development tools.
- Experience developing voiceover-based e-learning modules.
- Working knowledge of e-learning authoring tools and LMS course publishing standards.
- Basic audio recording and editing skills preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of learning management systems and web-based delivery tools.
- Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to implement new processes and influence others.
- Ability to travel up to 25%.
- Flexibility to support multiple shifts.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of five to seven years of progressive experience in a Learning and Development role, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Hands-on experience coordinating and delivering multiple training initiatives in a corporate setting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to facilitate training sessions in both office and operational environments.
- Ability to travel to job sites and company locations as required.
