Position Description
We are seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented HR Generalist to support the human resources operations of our university. This role plays a vital part in fostering a positive work environment for faculty, staff, student employees and administrators by being the primary initial contact for various HR functions such as benefits, workers’ compensation, recruitment, compliance, and employee relations.
Location of Work
Must work onsite at Biola University, La Mirada, California
Hours
Part-time – 25 hours/week, 12 months per year, assignment is temporary for one year and the need to continue it will be assessed as the end of the year approaches.
Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred
Supervisor
This position reports to the Sr. Director of HR and will support various functions within the department.
Alignment with Theological Position
Alignment with Theological Positions: The person who fills this position must be someone who personally agrees with Biola’s Articles of Faith and Statement of Biblical Principles. As such, this person may not speak against or act in a manner inconsistent with these positions during the course of their employment at Biola.
Essential Duties
1. Communicate basic employee benefits information, including benefits guide, tuition waiver and exchange programs
2. Support compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies as instructed by HR staff, this duty will vary by level of knowledge and training
3. Assist Sr. Director of HR and Sr. Director, University Ops & Special Projects with scheduling meetings or establishing timelines
4. Support the various employee leave programs (FMLA, disability, military, etc.)
5. Serve as the initial contact for workers’ compensation reporting
6. Assist in policy application and help ensure implementation is aligned with university goals
7. May assist in facilitating learning and development initiatives for faculty and staff
8. Serve as a resource for various HR events, including hosting Health Fair, conference hosting, employee recognition events as needed
9. May be asked to prepare reports and analytics on staffing, turnover, and benefits utilization depending on skill level
10. Maintain elements of data in the HRIS systems and ensure accurate employee data management
11. All other duties as assigned that the supervisor determines are appropriate
Required Skills/Qualifications
1. 1 - 2 years of HR experience, preferably in a higher education environment, with broad exposure to onboarding/offboarding, benefits administration, payroll/timekeeping, and HR compliance
2. Strong knowledge of employment laws and university HR practices
3. Experience with HRIS platforms (e.g., Banner, ADP) and basic data reporting
4. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
5. Familiarity with process documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) creation.
6. Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
7. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced environment
8. Motivated self-starter, confident, and able to navigate through change
9. Ability to manage high volumes of work, execute flawlessly, and understand HR processes
10. Strong team player, internally with HR team and with the various employees that interact with HR
Hiring range: $23.00 - 25,00 per hour.
